THE STATE VERSUS – S/T
Adelaide quartet The State Versus introduce their self-titled EP with First Place, which begins in a pretty punchy manner but drops the decibels in its final quarter before kicking things back up a notch for the conclusion. A similar quiet/loud recipe is employed throughout this set of distinctive melodic rock songs – even the hardest hitting track, Soul Archeology, still finds time for a few piano breaks (although Alex Bray’s keys, which lend an appealing dynamic throughout, aren’t always so dainty). Mystery might not quite know whether it’s a balls-out rocker or a delicate ballad, but the back-and-forth tension keeps things interesting, if not delivering the pay-off that the more straightforward Context offers with its memorable ‘oh oh whoa’ chorus. The pensive and angular opening of Pity The Pretty Prey creates an outstanding atmosphere, although the uncommon bombast is subsequently married with some moments of standard melodic punk riffing. However, while it doesn’t totally fulfill its potential, it’s still the track I’d recommend most from this debut release.
