OVERSEAS – O Captain! My Captain!
Debut 8 track EP from San Jose’s melodic pop punkers Overseas. This has that modern day pop punk sound to it popularised by the likes of No Trigger, Such Gold or Four Years Strong. While the aforementioned bands do shine through in the sound of Overseas, including guest vocals from Such Gold’s Ben Kotin, they still retain a fair bit of the traditional Fat Wreck pop punk sound readers may be more familiar with ala Strung Out. Refreshingly the vocals have a very natural sound to them with very little studio manipulation are highly likeable and listenable. For a release and a band I knew nothing about until I received it in the mail, this is a pretty cool find and very promising release.

OVERSEAS – O Captain! My Captain!
Costa Rican punk rock isn’t exactly an established niche at this point in time, but the aptly named Overseas are looking to change that with their debut EP. Borrowing heavily from the same playbook that’s seen Four Year Strong and current scene sensations The Story So Far leapfrog the lion’s share of their contemporaries, this young crew shakes things up a little by adding a healthy dash of ’90s pop-punk charm (think The Starting Line and the remainder of the Drive Thru stable) to the mix. At only eight tracks in length the whole thing is over all too quickly; however, a well utilised guest appearance from Such Gold frontman Ben Kotin – coupled with the group’s rather impressive songwriting – has laid enough of a solid foundation for Overseas to build upon in the future.
